Years ahead of it's time, the Atari Lynx 2 is the refined version of the first true color handheld console. Just like the Lynx 1, this Lynx 2 has a palette of 4,096 colors (16 simultaneous) on a 3.5" backlit color LCD screen. It runs at 16MHz and contains an 8 way directional control pad. Graphically it is 16-Bit, and it's 8-bit sound card enabled voice sampling used in some game titles (Pinball Jam). By pressing [option 2 + pause] simultaneously, you can flip the screen to make the system easier to use for left handed players. Certain games call for a vertical screen (Klax) and the Lynx can accommodate these by rotating the picture 90 degrees. The games load into the back of the system and the batteries load into the bottom. The Lynx 2 takes 6 AA batteries that last for an average of five hours. The auto shut off function found in the first Lynx was removed as too many people were losing game data. Instead this function was turned into an optional shut off during pause to conserve battery life. Also a red LED indicator light was added in order to tell when the system is on and when the batteries are low (flashing). One more nice function add-on is the soft reboot which can be activated by pushing [option 1 + pause] simultaneously to reset the game. On the Lynx 2 the sound is in stereo and the units each have a headphone jack the systems can also be networked, thusly many of the games support up to 4 Players (when linked with a comlynx cable). Roms on durable wafer thin game carts, a trend that would set the standard for generations of future handheld systems.
